Oliver!

May-June 1996

The musical Oliver! by Lionel Bart was based on the novel Oliver Twist by the great Charles Dickens. Bart scored several sizeable successes on the British stage of the late 1950s and early 1960s as well as penning some of the earliest British pop songs, including the classic Cliff Richard hit Living Doll. His musical Oliver!, which turned the evil Fagin of the novel, into a more sympathetic character topped all his previous successes with its string of wonderful, memorable songs. Oliver! established a long running record for a musical in the West End and ran up a continuing and regular series of overseas productions and revivals, establishing itself as one of the great family musicals of the post-war era.
