Sweeney Todd

Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is unlike other musicals in almost every sense of the word – this shouldn’t surprise though given its author, the unique Stephen Sondheim. It is a musical thriller and a macabre tragi-comedy based on the legend/myth stretching back beyond 1846 of a half mad 19th century English barber. But don’t be too depressed! Sweeney Todd also offers a great sense of fun, mixing intense drama with very funny moments of dark humour and irony. Indeed you will find yourself smiling one moment and gasping with surprise the next – it is after all, a musical thriller. First staged in 1979, it won eight Tony awards and is acclaimed as one of the most challenging, demanding yet professionally fulfilling pieces of musical theatre.
