Rehearsals Underway for Classic Musical

Rehearsals are underway for our 2013 production of The Sound of Music.  While the children had a two day “bootcamp” at the end of the school holidays, the full cast began working on the production last week.

We would appreciate contact from anyone in the community interested in helping out with sets and costumes.  There are already a number of people on board in the teams, but it would be great to be able to share the workload a bit more.  If you are interested contact the Secretary at dev_choral@hotmail.com.

Tickets for The Sound of Music will go on sale March 4.

A Wealth of Talent at Kid’s Workshop

A fantastic group of keen kids worked with guest Director Keren Smithies, guest vocalist Elizabeth Sandman and the Vocal Director Brett Budgeon in a three hour music and drama workshop.

Honing their skills in the lead up to auditions for The Sound of Music next week, the kids took on three and four part harmonies, got familiar with some of the classic music from the show and learnt some great singing exercises. In the drama session, theatre games helped bring out some terrific acting skills and also gave some added confidence for the upcoming auditions.

These talented youngsters have certainly given Director Emil Djakic a lot to think about as he prepares to audition many of these children for the roles of the Von Trapp family.

Thanks to our great session leaders for a fantastic afternnon of fun and friendship.  Thank you also to the committee members who helped out during the afternoon.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC – All sessions for auditions are now full!

We will be opening up Tuesday 4th December from 6.30pm for further auditions.  This session will be for all ADULT characters + Leisl and Rolf.

Society Announces a Much Loved Classic

Devonport Choral Society is excited to announce their next major musical production, one of the world’s favourite musicals – Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music.

Loved by adults and children of all ages, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s final musical collaboration features such well-known favourites as “Climb Every Mountain”, “Edelweiss”, “My Favourite Things”, “Do-Re-Mi” and of course, “The Sound of Music”.

The production will be directed by Dr Emil Djakic, with musical direction by Dominique Baker and Brett Budgeon and additional choreography by Elizabeth Viney.

While the songs and the characters will be familiar to many, this production promises to have a very fresh look and feel with all new sets and a vibrant local cast.

The Devonport Choral Society has gained a reputation for very high quality musical theatre in the last few years and has most recently presented less mainstream productions like Bad Girls, Urinetown and Sweeney Todd.  The return to a classic like The Sound of Music will again showcase the versatility of the company and local performers.

“To get to work as a Director for Devonport Choral on The Sound of Music is really exciting. This show is a rich drama supported by a fabulous musical score. I would hope to bring a new generation of musical theatre audiences in to contact with the tension, joy and love that The Sound of  Music celebrates so well on stage”, Dr Djakic said.

An information session, children’s workshop and auditions will be held in November.  Additional information will be released on the Society’s website as details are confirmed.
