Congratulations to Sid Sidebottom who was awarded a life membership of DCS on the closing night of The Secret Garden. Sid has been involved with Devonport Choral for many years, both on and off stage. His first role with DCS (to my knowledge anyway – feel free to correct me!) was on-stage in Hello Dolly! He then went on to direct a string of highly successful musicals – Guys and Dolls (1993), Barnum (1994), Into the Woods(1997), West Side Story(1998), Footloose(2006) and A Slice of Saturday Night(2006). In intervening years he starred in Oliver!(1996) as the menacing Bill Sykes and as a much more loveable cockney, Alfie Dolittle, in My Fair Lady (2005). He also has taken on the role of society patron. Thanks Sid, for your fantastic contribution to the society…..but don’t rest on your laurels….there are a lot more musicals out there just waiting to be brought to life!
Life members and patrons’ awards.
Congratulations to Stuart Grant (lighting) and Andrea Hendrey (singing/acting) on being awarded DCS bursaries through the generosity of our Life Members and Patrons. These two talented young people will now be able to attend short courses or workshops in their chosen fields.
Opening Night – The Secret Garden.
Wow! What a great night. The show went off beautifully for its official opening. The Entertainment Centre was almost full and the audience were appreciative and enthusiastic – recognizing the difficulty of this musical and drawn in by the emotion and mystery of the story. Cast and crew excelled themselves and should be justifiably proud of another fine piece of community theatre.
It was also lovely to catch up with so many old friends at the opening night supper. I saw many happy reunions between theatre folk who have, at one time or another, worked together in DCS or other local theatre groups. Denise commented in her speech that an important part of involvement in theatre is the relationships that develop between people all striving to reach a common goal. I can only think back on last night’s performance and thoroughly agree!

Easter progress report.
Cast and crew have been busy over the Easter. A rehearsal has been called for Thursday night; set construction and painting is underway at the shed and costume “witches” (hubble bubble, toil and trouble) have been whipping up a welter of pinnies, garden frocks and soldiers dress uniforms.
Changes to site.
After much consideration, your friendly DCS web-mistress (love that title!) has decided that she will be able to stay on top of things by blogging all the DCS news rather than re-jigging the web pages every time we have something new to share. You will still be able to access photos and information about the DCS and its productions by visiting these pages. All photos can be accessed through the photos link in the right hand sidebar.
